Is the philosophical outlook indicative of the historical period? 4. Through striking compositions and sophisticated color schemes, Hiroshige represented the great forces of nature, evoking the poetic moods of particular seasons, times of day, and kinds of weather. We need criticism moored to place, and to the history of that place. … Ouroussoff is not good enough because he reinforces the worst trends in architectural culture, never explains where he comes from and never explores the many different places we might go.” Nancy Levinson, the editor of Places, expands on Lange’s argument in her essay “ Critical Beats .” Levinson sees the decline of architecture criticism as the result not only of the highly reductive “art-critique” approach of critics like Ouroussoff, but also of the intensifying internationalization of the field. “The accelerating globalization of architecture culture,” she writes, “has created for architecture criticism an unintentional conundrum, which is that it’s practically impossible to produce good criticism on a global scale.” Add to that the “messy confusion of the early days of the digital revolution,” as Levinson puts it, which is challenging journalism to develop new business and editorial models, and we can see why newspapers have jettisoned everyone not considered essential — with architecture critics among the first to go.

As I’ve already observed, the steady displacement of a discourse of effects by one of ‘pure’ procedures (as if there were any such thing) works to mute the range of judgements about outcomes, which are simply justified reflexively: ‘this line represents the connection between Richard Wagner’s desk and Otto Wagner’s − nuff said!’ In part, I think, this neurasthenic silliness is a consequence of the emptying out of the architectural signifier by its asymptotic trajectory in the direction of minimalism and its macho purgation of meaning.

In the same readings, one can see the allusions, which have continuously provided intellectual ingredients through which artistic judgment came to be mixed. At the opening of the exhibition Placemakers: Contemporary Queensland Architects, as Anna Bligh, state premier, stood on the Gallery of Modern Art concourse delivering a rapturous opening speech, we latecomers hovered at the back beside Michael Parekowhai’s sculpture The Horn of Africa. What irritates me—and I realize I may be an outlier here—is that this is one more example of how the broad, multi-disciplinary practice of urban design has been hijacked by the media-fueled frenzy over all things architecture.

Every few years, this kind of frontal assault on the value of contemporary architecture is launched, but the criticisms this time seem especially shallow and misplaced. In applications such as Epicurious, which included a visible reminder of the search feature, users turned to search much more frequently. These remains have been studied for centuries. The easy answer, one that works well for small agile teams (which is the vast majority), is that everyone on the team is responsible for architecture.

The noble class and knights sat in the first 14 rows of the Colosseum, the section known as the ima cavea. Van Dyck, a true genius at portraiture, revealed the aspirations of his sitters. The young Infanta Margarita is surrounded by her entourage of maids of honour, chaperone, bodyguard, and two dwarfs. When the Impressionist group saw Japanese paintings and ukiyo-e woodblock prints, they liked the perspective and bold design. Yet assessment of architecture, especially in public media, remains highly subjective and qualitative, focused mostly on visual, contextual and historical attributes. Plenty of the things I discover this way are things I might never otherwise have seen, and for that, too, new media is invaluable.
